Nantong University was founded by Zhang Jian in 1912, and its predecessor was a private medical school in Nantong. It is one of the earliest medical schools in China. In 1927, it was transformed into Nantong Medical College, and in 1928 it was renamed into Nantong University Medical College formed by the merger of the three agricultural, textile, and medical schools.

Nantong University boasts a robust academic structure with 24 schools covering diverse disciplines such as Medicine, Engineering, Arts, Sciences, and Business.
